Massage Contraindications
Prior to receiving a massage, it is essential to disclose any massage contraindications.
Local Contraindications
The massage therapist will then assess whether they can work around these areas. However, if the contraindications are too severe, massage may not be suitable. In such cases, the therapist reserves the right to refuse treatment to maintain health standards. The following are common contraindications:
cuts or open wounds
bruises
varicose veins
broken bone
burns
certain skin conditions.
Absolute Contraindications
You cannot undergo massage therapy if you have these conditions because massage could exacerbate them, worsening your problem. These conditions are:
Fever- Regardless of the cause, whether it's a cold, the flu, or another infection, it's advisable to postpone massage therapy. Massage increases circulation, which may inadvertently help the infection increase the severity of the fever and the infection itself.
Contagious Diseases- Having a contagious disease poses a risk to your therapist and their other clients. It's essential to be considerate and cancel your massage appointment if you contract a contagious condition.
Blood Clots- Massage can dislodge blood clots, which could be hazardous as the clot may migrate to the brain, lungs, or heart. If you're aware of any blood clots, consult your doctor before undergoing massage therapy to ensure it won't exacerbate the condition.
Pregnancy- Due to the lack of specialized training in prenatal massage, it's not advisable to administer massage treatments to pregnant individuals.
Kidney Conditions or Liver Conditions- Massage can put additional strain on both the liver and kidney if they're not functioning normally. This occurs because massage increases blood flow, which in turn increases the movement of waste through the body. If you're experiencing health issues with either your kidney or liver, it's likely that massage therapy will not be suitable for you. Consult a healthcare professional to determine if massage will aggravate any kidney or liver condition.
Cancer- Although massage can alleviate some discomfort caused by cancer, it should only be administered by someone trained to work with cancer patients. The patient should obtain a release form from their doctor before undergoing treatment. Inflammation- If you have inflammation of any kind, massage in the affected area will further exacerbate the situation.
Uncontrolled Hypertension- Massage increases blood flow. If you have high blood pressure that's not under control, the increased blood flow resulting from massage therapy may cause complications.
